Giving Thanks to Caregivers
A Veteran caregiver speaks with Cheryle Safford, LCSW-Caregiver Program Coordinator (shown right).
When anticipating retirement and growing old together, Carla had never pictured her active and energetic husband Russell becoming disabled. Russell, at the age of 51, sustained injuries while serving in Afghanistan and lost his sight. With her husband needing pervasive care and attention, Carla quit her regular job to become “Russell’s eyes” and his full time Caregiver.
Though Carla is very dedicated to her husband's care, handling all that is required to manage a home and Russell’s needs can be difficult for one individual. This is why Carla decided to visit the VA Caregiver Education Fair, held at the Charlie Norwood VA on Wednesday, November 16th.
Family Caregivers of Veterans were greeted with appreciation at the event where VA and community representatives provided information for more than 20 services available to those caring for Veterans at home. Cheryle Safford, Caregiver Support Coordinator, organized the event and is eager to meet Veteran Caregivers, like Carla, and help them obtain benefits and assistance available through VA.
Whether it’s a piece of equipment needed at the home, home health aide services or respite care, allowing the full time Caregiver a well-deserved day off, VA’s Caregiver Support Program is there to assist.
Because of the Caregiver Education Fair, Carla was given information and support that will ensure Russell remains in his own home with his wife at his side.
November is National Caregivers Month, recognizing the time, patience, care and energy Caregivers provide to their loved ones. Veteran Caregivers can contact Cheryle Safford at 706-733-0188 ext. 5259 or visit www.caregiver.va.gov for more information about assistance available to them.
