The Uptowners R&B Band

By Sheri Smith, Music Therapist
Friday, October 29, 2010

The Uptowners, our very own R&B band, is a Music Therapy group designed for VA patients who are proficient instrumentalists and/or singers of R&B music and who would therapeutically benefit from the group interaction, accountability component and regular performance in such a group.  The group was founded in 2007 and is facilitated by our music therapist, Sheri Smith, and our peer support counselor, Brian Anderson.  Based upon the Recovery Model, the purpose of the group is to direct patient energies into making music for enjoyment, satisfaction, and growth toward a self-determined, healthy lifestyle; encourage peer support; and, lessen anxiety and empower individuals through enjoyable, gratifying activity to support a healthy leisure lifestyle.

The Uptowners submitted entries into the National Veterans Creative Arts Competition this Spring and received 1st place in the “Band category”: a new category to the competition this year.

The Uptowners:
Harold Anderson, drums
Paul T. Sylas, bass
Ken Frederick, percussion
Gregg Howard, guitar and vocals
Brian Anderson, vocals
Sheri Smith, keyboard
Christian Ndeti, guitar and vocals

The Uptowners are currently working on their debut CD and hope to have it ready by the holidays.
