Members of VFW Georgia Post 5255 of Lawrenceville visited the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center’s Active Duty Rehab Unit (ADRU) November 16th to say thanks and give great gifts to very deserving military members.  The Unit, a joint effort between VA and DOD, was established at the Charlie Norwood VA to care for wounded warriors.

VFW 5255 member and Retired Lt. Col. Ronnie McClendon had a few words for the men and women in uniform, expressing to the group that he “could relate to some of their experiences, but not all of them.”  McClendon tearfully explained that he “had not been hurt while in the service” and wished all of the patients a speedy recovery.   To help with that recovery, VFW 5255 members supplied each patient with iPods, blankets and some hugs.

Staff Sgt. Grant Doughton Holder was one of the lucky patients to receive an iPod and said he was amazed at the generosity shown to the Active Duty Rehab Unit.  Sgt. Holder, who is suffering from a degenerative eye disease that will eventually take his sight, said that “meeting Veterans is always an honor” and a group that he can immediately relate to.    With Thanksgiving around the corner, Sgt. Holder stated, “I’m thankful for my family, my health, my home and the Blind Rehab and ADRU staff.”
