VA Augusta dentists score high marks with Veterans

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- On the heels of improving access-to-care scores for completed appointments, Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center’s dental program is also receiving some of the highest marks in the network from Veterans, and in some cases, higher than its national non-VA dental counterparts.

In a report released by Veterans Integrated Service Network 7 on Sept. 7 titled “Dental Patient Satisfaction Survey Report,” Charlie Norwood dentists received an 88 percent satisfaction rating, eight points higher than the national VA average and 29 points higher than the national (non-VA) benchmark. The service is rated in four “global ratings” and two “composites.”

The service’s global ratings for “Dental Care” and “State-of-the-Art Dental Care” were on par with the VA national average and still well above the non-VA care average. The 97.4 score for “Dental Care from Dentists and Clinical Staff” and “Access to Dental Care” was also higher than VA and non-VA averages.

“Dental Care from Dentists and Clinical Staff” reflects that Veterans feel they are treated with respect, that staff go the extra mile to make them comfortable and that the veteran feels staff listen to them and spend enough time with them. “Access to Dental Care” reflects getting routine and urgent appointments as soon as the Veteran wants as well as the amount of time spent in the waiting room and being informed of delays.  The ratings period for this report ran from April 2015 to March 2016.

Dr. Ashley Roach, chief of the dental Service here, said she and her team have worked hard to ensure Veterans get the best dental treatment, and continue to strive for improvement.

“We’re proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish but there’s always room for improvement. Continuing to bolster those marks and seeing how high we can set the bar delivering service that follows our I CARE values is our day-to-day motivation.”

Only one other VA medical center in the network, Tuscaloosa, Ala., was higher in overall ratings. Dr. Oladipo Kukoyi, VA Augusta chief of staff, said these numbers are representative of how Augusta is moving in right direction in all phases of its care for Veterans.

“Our combined Charlie Norwood team is doing what is necessary on all fronts for our Veterans,” Kukoyi said. “Our dental services team is no exception. I am so proud to see them spotlighted for a year’s worth of great work and know that team will continue with amazing success thanks to Dr. Roach and her valued leadership.”

Maria Andrews, medical center director for Charlie Norwood, applauded the dental team on its accomplishment.

“This is another testament to how Charlie Norwood is becoming the de facto choice for medical care for Veterans in the CSRA – their VA,” she said. “I’m proud of Dr. Roach and her team for working so hard and creating a team imbued with excellence. Now, I want that excellence to spill over into all areas of the Charlie Norwood so our Veterans can smile and say, “That’s my VA.”
