VA Augusta vol earns $5,000 scholarship

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A volunteer from the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center has earned $5,000 for college serving Veterans for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Ja’nya Nickerson, who volunteered at CNVAMC from the summer of 2013 through the summer of 2016, earned the scholarship through the Jesse Brown Memorial Youth Scholarship Program, a program headed by the Disabled American Veterans. This is the first scholarship award winner VA Augusta has had since 2012.
“We couldn’t be more excited for Ja’nya in earning this scholarship. It is earned is not easily attained,” said Robert Frasier, chief of voluntary services at VA Augusta. “We thank the DAV for its constant work with Charlie Norwood and the VA. It’s moments like these that crystalize our partnership for Veterans.”
The Jesse Brown Memorial Youth Scholarship Program honors young volunteers who are dedicated to serving veterans. It is named for former DAV National Service Officer and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jesse Brown. According to the DAV, the award “honors the memory of a DAV leader dedicated to serving veterans through recognition of those who carry on his legacy of service.
Each year, one outstanding applicant receives the top scholarship in the amount of $20,000 to help fund their higher education. In addition, the top winner and parent receive an all-expenses paid trip to DAV National Convention to receive the award and be recognized for their dedication and commitment to Veterans. Additional scholarships are awarded in the amounts of $15,000, $10,000, $7,500 & $5,000.
