Spinal Cord Injury
The Spinal Cord Injury Unit (SCIU) at Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center was established in 1981 and with 71 beds is one of the largest centers in the VA System. The SCIU houses a variety of resources to ensure timely access to care, quality treatment and outstanding services for Veteran and active duty patients. The SCIU has been CARF Accredited since 2000. Any Veteran with a spinal cord injury meeting eligibility requirements for VA healthcare can receive care in the SCI Center. Veterans with income above the threshold can be assessed for catastrophic disability to establish their eligibility for care.
Programs Offered
Nurses, rehabilitation therapists, social workers, psychologists and physicians/physicians assistants work closely with Veterans, family members, and significant others to ensure coordination of care and communication. Services include but are not limited to:
SCI Inpatient Unit – (1GE/1GF/1H)
- Acute (non-ICU) Care for New Injuries, including patients who are ventilator dependent
- Comprehensive Acute Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder Rehabilitation
- Acute Med-Surg Care for Veterans with Chronic Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder
- Annual Evaluation/Check-Up Admissions
