Spinal Cord Injury

The Spinal Cord Injury Unit (SCIU) at Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center was established in 1981 and with 71 beds is one of the largest centers in the VA System.  The SCIU houses a variety of resources to ensure timely access to care, quality treatment and outstanding services for Veteran and active duty patients. The unit is CARF Accredited.

Programs Offered

Nurses, rehabilitation therapists, social workers and psychologists and physicians work closely with Veterans, family members, and significant others to ensure coordination of care and communication. Services include but are not limited to:

SCI Inpatient Unit – (1GE/1GF/1H)

  • Acute (non-ICU) Care for New Injuries
  • Comprehensive Acute Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder Rehabilitation
  • Acute Med-Surg Care for Veterans with Chronic Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder
  • Annual Evaluation/Check-Up Admissions

SCI Outpatient Services (1F100)

  • Urodynamic Studies and Cystoscopes
  • Comprehensive Annual Evaluations
  • Care and Routine Follow Up for Acute Medical Problems
