“Communication is vital to life. Speaking, hearing, understanding speech, and enjoying social activities such as dining, connect us to what is most important: families,” said Tamara Seabrook, speech-language pathologist at VA Augusta.
Each May, Better Hearing & Speech Month provides an opportunity for VA to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of audiologists and speech-language pathologists in providing life-altering treatment.
Veterans experiencing muffled or dull sounds after leaving a noisy area; extra effort to chew or swallow; trouble speaking or difficulty understanding speech; or have difficulties following conversations in the presence of background noise are prime candidates for this event, Seabrook said.
