VA Augusta leads country in same-day access, 4th in primary care provider ratings

November 21, 2018

AUGUSTA, Ga. (Nov. 19, 2018) – Employees at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center were recently given high marks for work done in primary care and same-day medical services.

In the the most recent Survey of Healthcare Experiences of Patients (SHEP) results, Charlie Norwood’s primary care service rating was fourth in country out of 146 facilities. In the Same-Day Access category for August and the four months preceding, Charlie Norwood ranked first in front of facilities in Indiana and Texas. The most recent results are from August 2018.

“We continue to make great strides in all areas of our care with Veterans. Primary Care and Same-Day Services are two areas we’ve focused on and that effort has paid off,” said Dr. Robin E. Jackson, VA Augusta medical center director. “We continue to work in all areas to ensure Veterans choose VA first for their care.”

SHEP uses the same questions as the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Survey. SHEP is a key indicator used in many areas of evaluating the VA Medical Center and is driven by Veteran response.

In Same-Day Services, Augusta leads the nation by almost 12 percent. Same-Day Services are offered in primary care and mental health at the Uptown facility five days a week. A Same-Day Rapid Clinic is available at the downtown location for same-day issues.

“The quality of care and the access means so much to our Veterans,” said Dr. Terri Lockhart, VA Augusta chief of staff. “We want to build on the success of these results to ensure our Veterans choose Charlie Norwood for their care every time”
